MEETING: Wednesday, December 16, 2004.

Joe Bruno gave a brief intro to Xandros, which he suggested as a good transition from Windows, as its desktop and applications closely resemble Windows. Version 3.0 has just appeared.

John Moore's presentation began with his observation at last month's Installfest that people are sometimes confused by the question whether to install Linux as a workstation or server. He explained the issues to be considered. His lecture notes on Install Decisions are in his "Lessons in Linux" pages.

Next he went deeply into the origin and application of Postscript language and printers (also included in the "Lessons" page above). He also added some info on Adobe PDF files, which are essentially PDF4.0. As usual, John clarified many points which some of us thought we knew something about and discovered a lot we didn't understand.

For example, he explained the CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) which is on most of our machines with its own management and info page which can be accessed at http://localhost:631/. Another cute tip was the use of the command line "file" <'filename'> to discover the file type of virtually any file.
