Our fall season opened on September 22nd with a presentation by John Moore on finding help in Linux,
a topic some of us thought we knew well enough (not that we always find what we need). However
especially toward the end of that section John suggested some strategies and resources we may not have considered.
His notes in detail are at find help in his "Lessons in Linux" series
on this web site.
He also covered the vital matter of Linux backups, which you will find discussed at the address above. Of special interest
were his examples of effective command-line backup strategies that do not require third-party or even Linux apps to
manage. However don't overlook Konserve, an excellent back-up utility in the KDE archive.
Last but far from least, was an introduction to virus scanning on a windows machine using Linux. You will find in his
notes reference to a bootable Linux CD called LinuxDefender Live!
which will scan Linux, Windows and DOS partitions. This is based on Knoppix, the amazing utility on CD which will boot and
run Linux on any machine which will boot from the CD Drive. Joe Bruno demo'd version 3.7 (beta) vintage August 13, 2004. This thing will
find your network connection and hardware, identify all your drives and partitions, and run OpenOffice1.1 with no manual intervention.
Correction -- one intervention! Since this is a German app, it sets up a German keyboard, so to get an English version you must add
at the boot prompt "knoppix lang=us" AND instead of typing the "=" type shift-zero. Download the iso from Sourceforge or from
Knoppix and click the American/British flag for an English window.
