At our August 20th meeting John Moore led us on a guided tour of the operating
system, i.e. Where do parts of the system normally live? How does this computer boot? What does it mean to
administer a system remotely using telnet? How to do a couple of common rescue tasks, etc.
Not only is John a great teacher, but the session was an example of the best of users groups in that a lot of informed
input came from some of our more knowledgable members as well. You'll get a lot of what you missed if you look at John's notes which he
kindly put in his Lessons in Linux under the topic of 'Linux Tour.'
NOTE: At the end of his notes John has warned us of the appalling dangers inherent in the Digital Rights Management (DRM)
legislation making its way through Congress. Read this part, if nothing else, and take action.
The September 2002 issue of Linux Journal
contains this apt quote from Samuel Adams who threw this taunt to those too cowardly to support the American Revolution:
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace.
We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may
posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
