Here are Joe Bruno's notes on the Install Fest on June 13th:

(Also check out Howard Ball's notes on Linux boot disks from windows)

Tonight we needed two rooms for the install fest.(it got a little too crowded for one). A number of people came to watch and learn. I hope everyone went home having learned at least a little.

I continue to be pleased with the enthusiasm demonstrated by many of our members.
One very nice thing was one member got sound working on his laptop with Mandrake loaded... He had not been able to get sound working on that machine, and all of the posts he had read indicated that people could not get the sound to work on his particular model. Thanks to John Moore, who helped with the solution!

Problems found:
We did find an old Compaq that we couldn't load linux on...later we realized that it might have been an oddball bios on the hard drive that old Compaqs used to use...so, unfortunately, we had to give up on that one.

One machine that a member brought was using EZ-Drive hard disk manager software. He wanted to keep the Windows partition. It was impossible to exorcise that with available software, but the drive was swapable and Rich Nayman formatted it. The Linux install for this machine will be on Tuesday at 6 PM, before the meeting. (Meeting is at 7 PM.)

Another old machine with low memory started an install on a new large drive...this member also kept his old windows partition, however, he repartitioned his hard drive into several more partitions, and did block testing of these hard drive partitions before formatting them. This testing, and the formatting, took about 1 1/2 hours! This machine will also return on Tuesday for the install of the OS. (Now that those partitions are formatted, the rest should go much more quickly!) Another laptop had a successful install, however he didn't have a USB (external) CD-RW drive get recognized. He will get online and look for a driver for it.

Here's what you missed if you didn't attend. Ed Weinberg is holding forth on the first install while Rich Nayman sets up the projector so everyone can see what's going on.
