Our presenters at the May 21st meeting, John Moore and Ed Weinberg, in addition to bringing everyone up to speed as to what exactly Linux is and how it came to be what it is today, concentrated on preparing us for the "Install Fest" now scheduled for Thursday, June 13th at the White Plains Middle School. John led us through the first of his "Lessons in Linux."

Here are some points to consider in preparing for the "Fest" to install RedHat 7.3:

o Bring your complete set-up, including, if a desktop, mouse, keyboard and monitor.
o Ideally have either an empty second drive (Linux will install anywhere, but be sure your BIOS can handle the drive if you buy one of the 30-40 GB monsters)
o If Linux will co-habit with Windoze on the same drive, the Windoze partition will have to be pushed down to accommodate Linux. Partition Magic is the way to do this.
o RedHat 7.3 without source code and documentation requires about 1.9 GB of drive space plus a separate 'SWAP' partition equal to about twice installed RAM.
o If you manage to come with the requisite amount of free drive space, our Guru's will help you partition and format your drive as well as deal with the multiboot issue.
o If all goes well, the installs will be smooth, but very old hardware or very new hardware may cause problems if the RedHat installation CD's don't have the right drivers. John suggests going to the RedHat website, hardware.redhat.com/hcl/, to review their hardware compatability list.
o Bring RedHat7.3 Installation CD's if you have them. If not, there will be extras from our Gurus.

Everyone is urged to come to the "Install Fest" even if only as observers. No matter how much you know, a group like this is certain to throw off a few sparks to ignite new interests!
