At the meeting on March 10, 2004 John Moore introduced emacs, the Swiss Army Knife of Linux, rightly so-called because, like so much of Linux it is almost infinitely configurable, customizable, and extensible. To call it an editor (and it is superb) is amost an insult because it is so much more. It displays a calendar which feeds into a diary, phases of the moon, and holidays of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as national and political holidays. It can be made to retrieve and send e-mail. It's spell-checker is smart enough to ignore tags when checking html documents. Its self-contained Lisp interpreter, together with multiple windows, allows you to work on a script file in one window and check its behavior in another. This is only the tip of the iceberg. As usual he has put his presentation on our web site at Lessons in Linux. which is studded with links to a wealth of information about using and extending emacs. And did we mention that there is a windows version at GNU's emacs windows site?
