As usual John Moore presented material which we might have thought we knew or were not interested in and proved us
wrong on one or both counts. His notes are on his
lessons in Linux pages.
First he described systems for automating your home with X-10 and other systems with more uses than one might have guessed.
Next he described some Linux based applications for streaming audio, music (legally), etc. He had some
interesting material on Linux apps for converting CD's to MP3 and Ogg Vorbis formats.
Finally on a completely different tack, he introduced the subject of RSS which means Really Simple Syndication (yes, most of us had to be told).
This is the way many content oriented web sites, such as the BBC, ZDNet and Wired, make their stuff accessible so that it can be tracked by some simple Perl scripts to detect items matching our personal interests. It is up to us when and how to retrieve their
feeds (PULL) instead of being at the mercy of a lot of stuff they might PUSH at us. He gives an example of tracking the IBM/SCO suit
on the New York Times.
